Ewww... but also OMG: Thoughts on The Fly (1986)

Okay so I finally got around to watching The Fly (the 80s one). I knew going in it'd be kinda gross, but man, they weren't kidding! Jeff Goldblum is SO good as Seth Brundle, like really selling the whole transformation. And the poor girl, Veronica, I felt so bad for her! Like, dating a genius is cool until he starts losing body parts, ya know? lol The special effects are surprisingly good for how old the movie is. Some of the Brundlefly stuff was seriously disturbing, especially when he starts losing his nails and teeth shudders. I almost had to look away when he was eating... well, I won't spoil it but it was pretty stomach-churning. But in a good, horror movie gross-out kinda way, I guess? I think what really got to me was how tragic it all was. Seth was this brilliant, if kinda eccentric, guy and then BOOM - fly DNA. The scene where he's trying to convince Veronica that he's still 'him' was actually really sad. Even when he's turning into a giant bug, you still kinda feel bad for him, which is a testament to Goldblum's acting. Overall, it's definitely a memorable movie. Not something I'd watch every week, probably ever again tbh, but it's worth seeing if you like body horror and want to see Jeff Goldblum at his (kinda) sexiest as a human fly monster. 7/10, would recommend... but maybe don't eat anything while you watch it!
