Okay, so I just watched Castle in the Sky...is it horror adjacent?
Alright fellow horror hounds, I know what you're thinking: 'Jessica, why are we talking about a Studio Ghibli movie on a thriller forum?'. Hear me out! I finally got around to watching Castle in the Sky and while it's definitely not straight-up horror (duh!), there are elements. The pirates, for one - those airship battles felt straight out of a dystopian nightmare sometimes, all that metal and fire! And the whole idea of a floating, technologically advanced castle abandoned in the sky... It's got a creepy vibe if you squint a little, right? The government agents felt like a more kid-friendly version of Umbrella Corporation! Plus, let's be real, Sheeta getting kidnapped and potentially experimented on? Suspense central. I especially loved the robot soldiers. They were initially terrifying, these lumbering metal behemoths, but then some of them were just overgrown gardeners? Talk about subverting expectations! That scene where one of them puts flowers in Sheeta's hair? Heartwarming AND unsettling, because like, who built these things and what the heck were they REALLY made for? Gives me the same vibe as some of the rogue AI tropes we see in modern horror films. Okay, so maybe I'm stretching it a bit to call it 'horror adjacent', but I think it touches on some of the same themes. Isolation, technological dread, the dark side of progress... Also, for being a kid's movie, it gets pretty intense. What did you guys think? Am I totally off-base here or did anyone else get a slightly spooky vibe from Castle in the Sky? I welcome any and all opinions! P.S. Sorry if that was a bit rambly, I just really needed to talk about it with SOMEONE. I can't be the only one who thought it was creepy, right?
