Blue Velvet: A REALLY Weird Theory (and is it even good?)
Okay, folks, so I finally watched Blue Velvet. I know, I know, I'm late to the party. I kept putting it off because, well, David Lynch, amiright? I'm usually trying to find stuff I can watch with the kids, and Lynch... not really known for that, haha. But after all the hype, I figured I needed to see what everyone was talking about. And, whew, it was something. My take is a little out there. I think the whole thing is a nightmare. Not like, 'oh, that was scary!' but an actual dream. Hear me out. Jeffrey Beaumont is WAY too naive and innocent, like a kid playing detective. And Dorothy Vallens? She's like every man's dark fantasy woman rolled into one. The exaggerated 50s vibe, the way everyone acts… it's all heightened and completely unrealistic. It's like a kid's twisted version of adulthood. Even the robin at the end feels forced, like a child's attempt at a happy ending after a messed up dream. And Frank Booth? Oh my gosh, Dennis Hopper was terrifying. He's the embodiment of pure, unadulterated evil. There's no logic to his actions, no real motivation beyond causing pain and getting off on it. That's nightmare fuel, right? And the way the movie jumps between the 'normal' Lumberton and this seedy, underground world... it's like the two sides of a subconscious mind battling it out. I'm usually not one for these kinds of interpretations, but this movie just SCREAMS dream logic to me. So, what do you guys think? Am I way off base? Also wanted to add -- I'm not sure if I liked it liked it. It was disturbing, sure, and Hopper was amazing, but I'm not sure I'd ever watch it again. It might be technically 'good' but it left me feeling kinda icky. Like I need to watch a Care Bears movie to cleanse my brain of all that darkness. What are your thoughts? Anyone feel the same way?
