Blue Velvet's wardrobe - So 80s, is it cool or just...?

Okay, so I just watched Blue Velvet for the first time (I know, late to the party!), and while the whole thing was like, intense, I couldn't stop focusing on the fashion. Like, Isabella Rossellini as Dorothy Vallens? That blue velvet robe is iconic, obviously, but I'm also kinda obsessed with all her club dresses. They're so slinky and…vulnerable? It's weird because they're glamorous but also kind of tragic, you know? Definitely adds to the whole messed up vibe of her character. But then you've got Sandy (Laura Dern), who is like, the opposite in her preppy sweaters and pleated skirts. Her look is so wholesome and All-American, it's practically screaming "contrast!" every time she's on screen with Dorothy. It's totally on the nose, but it works! I'm just wondering if it's a little too on the nose? Like, is her style a commentary on the superficiality of the town, or is that reading into it too much? Or maybe it's just a product of the time period? The eighties man were a wild time. And speaking of the 80s, I'm torn. Like, some of the clothes are definitely dated (sorry, Sandy's mom), but other pieces like Dorothy's slip dresses could totally work today. I'm also not sure what to make of Jeffrey's clothes... he's just wearing a regular sweater and jeans. Kind of like, the opposite of the other characters. Does anyone have any thoughts on how the styling adds to the film's themes? Specifically about the costume design? I would love to see some other people's opinions.
