Okay, 'Blue Velvet' and THAT Dress: Did Anyone Else...? (Spoilers)
Okay, watched Blue Velvet last night and I'm still feeling kinda...off. Lynch is something else, right? Anyway, I'm Sophia, and I'm always looking at the clothes, and Isabella Rossellini as Dorothy Vallens? Absolutely haunting. Like, she's captivating, but you just know something's terribly wrong. But I need to talk about that blue velvet dress. It's almost a character in itself, isn't it? The way it drapes, the color...it's so luxurious and yet so wrong given the context. I was thinking about it, and I wondered if anyone else picked up on this--does the dress speak to the perversion of innocence? It's like Dorothy's trying to maintain some kind of facade of elegance, but it's being completely ripped apart by Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper, yikes) and everything he represents. Also, the sequins looked really expensive (I know, shallow, but still!). Did anyone else find it jarring how perfectly coiffed and dressed Jeffrey (Kyle MacLachlan) is compared to everyone else? Is that Lynch drawing a contrast between like, a pristine outside covering a more disturbing underbelly? I felt like the costuming really helped to drive the theme of a dark undercurrent beneath the surface of small-town America. I'd love to hear what you guys thought, especially about Dorothy's dress. Am I reading too much into it, or is it as significant as I think it is? Also, that ear at the beginning!! Gah.
