Blue Velvet: Obsessed with Dorothy's Robes!
Okay, so I just finished watching Blue Velvet (finally!), and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. The whole thing is just... unsettling, right? But beyond the David Lynch weirdness, I couldn't stop focusing on Dorothy Vallens' costumes, especially her robes. Like, the first time we see her in that velvet robe, it's so luxurious but also kind of sad? It's almost like it's swallowing her whole. And then there's the sequined one she wears at the club - it's glamorous, but feels so desperate in a way. It's like she's trying too hard, or maybe her style is more of what Frank wants her to be. Isabella Rossellini is amazing, obvi, but I'm wondering if the clothes are doing even MORE work than I realize, you know? Anyone else notice this? Did anyone else find the costuming really impactful? Like, Jeffrey's preppy sweaters are so deliberately NORMAL compared to everything else going on. It's such a big contrast. Was the robe a symbol of her being trapped or something? I need a re-watch, for sure, but what were your all thoughts?
