Big Trouble in Little China - I'm All a Twitch!
Alright everyone, HughesReviews here! Been meaning to get to this one for ages. So I finally rewatched John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China last night, and, wow, it STILL holds up. I mean, the practical effects alone are worth the price of admission. Seriously, the creature design is just bonkers, especially Lo Pan and his floating eyeball monster. Pure eye candy for those of us who appreciate the craft. And the music! Carpenter always delivers on scores, and this one is no exception. It's this awesome blend of synth-heavy 80s goodness mixed with traditional Chinese elements. It's just... perfect for the film's tone. The theme song gets stuck in your head for days (seriously, I woke up humming it). It makes even Jack Burton's clueless bravado seem kinda cool, which is saying something. Speaking of Jack, Kurt Russell's performance is legendary. He's so wrong for this hero role, but that's what makes him so damn entertaining! I think what I enjoy most is how the movie completely subverts expectations. Like, Jack clearly thinks he's the hero, but he's mostly just stumbling around and getting in the way. Wang Chi is the real deal, and it's awesome that he gets the spotlight. The whole thing is a blast. If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out. If you HAVE seen it, what are some of your favorite moments? Let me know! One minor thing... I always wondered if they intended for the storyline with Gracie Law to feel as... undeveloped as it is? Like, she's supposed to be this love interest, but it doesn't really land for me. Still, it's a small gripe in a movie that's otherwise pure fun.
