Okay, "The Name of the Rose" just BROKE me... Anyone else feel utterly disturbed?

Alright, so I just finished watching "The Name of the Rose" (the 1986 version, with Sean Connery!), and WOW. I went in expecting a kinda interesting mystery thing, and I got… something so much darker and unsettling. Seriously, the atmosphere in that abbey was THICK with dread. From the moment William and Adso arrive, you just KNOW something's deeply wrong. It wasn't just the murders, but the oppressive feeling, the bizarre library... I felt claustrophobic just watching! And the ending?! Oh my god, the library burning… I just wanted to scream! I felt so hopeless watching William try to save all that knowledge. And that poor blind Jorge, so convinced he was doing God's work... ugh. It's just… tragic. Speaking of Jorge (played BRILLIANTLY by Feodor Chaliapin Jr, btw) does anyone else find his argument about laughter being evil terrifyingly compelling? Like, I don't AGREE with him, obviously, but he almost made me believe it for a second! I'm honestly still processing. It's not a 'fun' movie by any means, but it really got under my skin in a way few films do. Maybe it was the religious fanaticism that hit a nerve? I'm still trying to figure it out. What parts of the film lingered with you guys the most? Did anyone else feel a similar sense of dread and despair while watching? I need to know I'm not alone in feeling utterly shook by this movie! Also, can we talk about the lighting? So much of it was dark and shadowy, which just amplified the feeling of uneasiness. Did they, like, intentionally use only candlelight or something? It looked so authentic but also deeply unsettling!
