Okay, "The Name of the Rose" - Anyone Else Low-Key Obsessed?
So, I just re-watched "The Name of the Rose" (the 1986 Sean Connery one, obvi) and I'm still totally creeped out. I know it's not straight-up horror, but that whole vibe of monks dying mysteriously in a medieval abbey? Super unsettling! The way they filmed it, all dark and claustrophobic, really gets under your skin. Plus, the idea of knowledge being suppressed, ESPECIALLY in a religious setting... yeah, that's terrifying in its own way. I always get a little squirmy during the scenes in the scriptorium - all those ancient texts and secrets, you just KNOW something bad is gonna happen. Anyone else feel this way? Connery as William of Baskerville is perfect, too. He's so rational and determined, but you can see him slowly getting drawn into the madness. And Christian Slater as Adso is a great foil - all wide-eyed innocence in this den of weirdness. I especially love the scene where Adso has that fever dream - it's so visually striking and bizarre, totally different from the rest of the movie. It's like a glimpse into the messed-up subconscious of the abbey. I think what makes it so effective is that it feels so... real? Like, you could actually believe this happened. It taps into that historical paranoia about the church and the power they wielded. I also really love the ending, its a bit bleak, but it fits this film so well. No happy ending, just truth and grim reality. It's definitely one of those films that stays with you. Anyway, just wanted to throw my thoughts out there. Any other fans of "The Name of the Rose"? What did you think of it? Am I alone in thinking it's secretly a horror film disguised as a historical mystery? Let me know!
