Okay, "The Name of the Rose" - Intense, but Intriguing!

So, Sean Connery as a medieval detective monk? Yes, please! I finally watched "The Name of the Rose" and whoa, it was DARK. Definitely not one for the littles, obviously! The subject matter is pretty heavy – murder, religious fanaticism, that whole 14th-century vibe. But I was totally hooked! The atmosphere of the abbey was so creepy and claustrophobic, you could practically feel the dampness and smell the incense (and maybe something else...given the plot!). Christian Slater was adorable as the young novice, Adso. He was a nice contrast to Connery's somewhat cynical Baskerville. I found myself wanting to protect him! The library scenes were so cool – amazing set design. And the mystery itself was really compelling, trying to figure out who was knocking off these monks and why. Honestly, some of the theological arguments flew over my head (I'm no scholar!), but I could appreciate the tension between the different factions. There were definitely some unsettling scene, especially towards the end. The imagery can be pretty intense, so be warned if you're sensitive to that kind of thing. It's thought-provoking, though. The film raises some really interesting questions about knowledge, faith, and the dangers of unchecked power. It kind of makes you think, even after the credits roll. Overall, I enjoyed it! It's not a feel-good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but a really well-made historical thriller. Have any of you guys seen it? What did YOU think? Maybe I missed something important!
