Okay, I have FEELINGS about "The Name of the Rose" (and maybe a theory!!)

Okay so, I just finished watching "The Name of the Rose" and WHOA. It's... intense. Like, I knew it was going to be a murder mystery thing, but the whole atmosphere? The way the monastery just dripped with secrets and fear? I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. And Sean Connery? Iconic. William of Baskerville is like, the dad I never knew I needed – smart, skeptical, and totally committed to finding the truth even when everyone around him is losing their minds (or conveniently dying). I actually cried a little when Adso had to leave him at the end omg. That whole relationship thing was just so tender and pure in this crazy world. But here's where my mind went. So, obviously Jorge is painted as the villain, right? The old blind monk, obsessed with preserving knowledge (or rather, suppressing it). But what if... what if he genuinely thought he was protecting people? What if he truly believed that laughter and the free exchange of ideas were dangerous and would lead to chaos and the downfall of the church? Not that his methods were justified, obviously murder is never okay, but I think he believed he was doing the right thing deep down, in his own twisted way. It kinda made me feel bad for him. Like, think about it. He saw the world changing, new ideas spreading, and he was terrified of losing control, of losing the only power he knew. Fear can make people do crazy things. I'm not saying he's good, just... complex. And maybe a little tragic? I'm probably overthinking it, I usually do lol. But it just struck me that his motives weren't just evil, they were driven by something deeper. Anyway, what do you guys think? Am I totally off base? Let me know your thoughts! I’m still processing all this.
