"Karate Kid II": Am I the Only One Who Thinks It's... Overrated?
Alright, alright, settle down, Miyagi-stans. Before you start throwing crane kicks at your screens, let me preface this by saying I get the nostalgia. I really do. "Karate Kid" is a classic. But "Part II"? Seriously? I just rewatched it, and I'm even more convinced it's just...fine. At best. I mean, Okinawa is pretty and all, but the whole 'returning to his roots' thing felt kinda forced, didn't it? Like they needed an excuse to shoehorn in some new drama. And Sato? Honestly, the whole 'decades-long grudge over Yukie thing' felt cartoonish. Pat Morita is great, as always, and is carrying the whole movie, but the plot just feels...weak. The hurricane scene was cool, I'll give you that, but it felt more like a disaster movie interlude than an organic part of the story. And let's not even get started on Chozen. He's just such a one-dimensional bully. At least Johnny Lawrence had some nuance in the first movie. Chozen is just...angry. And kinda dumb, tbh. Maybe I'm just missing something. Everyone always talks about how 'deep' and 'spiritual' it is, but I just see cheesy '80s melodrama with pretty scenery. Am I the only one who thinks this is the weakest link in the original trilogy? Or am I destined to wander the internet alone, forever cursed with the knowledge that "Karate Kid II" is just...meh? Seriously, convince me I'm wrong. I'm open to hearing other perspectives, (even though you're probably all wrong, hehe). What am I missing?
