Karate Kid II - Miyagi's Secret Pain, Anyone Else Notice?
Okay, so we just re-watched Karate Kid Part II as a family (the kiddos love Daniel san!) and something struck me this time that maybe I hadn't fully appreciated before. We always talk about Miyagi being so wise and peaceful, but this movie really shows him dealing with some deep, deep pain from his past. Like, REALLY deep. Specifically, the scene where he's talking to Yukie about why he left Okinawa the first time. It's not just about dodging the fight with Sato, it's about a lost love and the shame he obviously carries around. You can see it in his eyes when he's talking about how he thought he was doing the right thing, but it all went wrong. I'm starting to wonder if maybe his whole 'balance' thing isn't just some philosophy he teaches Daniel, but something he actively needs to maintain his own sanity, you know? It's like the only way he finds peace is by helping others find theirs. The whole thing is just...intense. My theory is that the core of his teachings isn't just about winning fights, it’s about healing. Maybe Miyagi is so invested in Daniel's well-being not just because he's a father figure, but because he sees a kindred spirit in need of guidance. Someone to prevent him from making the same choices. Also, side note: Anyone else think Kumiko was super cute? My daughter wants to learn how to do that dance now haha. Anyway, just food for thought. Anyone else ever get this sense from Miyagi in Part II? Or am I just overthinking it after wrangling kids all day?! lol
