Okay, can we talk about the DETAILS in Great Mouse Detective?

Alright fellow film lovers, just rewatched "The Great Mouse Detective" and, as always, obsessed! I know everyone focuses on the animation (which, duh, is incredible), but seriously, the costuming and set design are EVERYTHING. I'm Sophia on Film, and I'm all about the visual storytelling, so details like this always grab me. Specifically, I was paying extra attention to Ratigan this time around. Ugh, what a villain. Not just his character, but the way he's DRESSED? That velvet smoking jacket, the tiny monocle, the way he carries that cane... it just screams decadent evil, right? Like, you instantly know he's bad news (and has probably spent WAY too much on tailoring). And then you have Basil, who’s rumpled and slightly disheveled in a charming, intellectual way. The clear visual contrast in their outfits really underscores their personalities and opposing forces. It's subtle but brilliant. But here's my question, and maybe I'm just being super picky. But the bar scene? When Ratigan is doing that song? It's so dark, and everyone's so grimy, are the extra-layered costumes for insulation or just to make them look more disgusting? I'm wondering if anyone knows more about the choices made for the background characters in that specific scene – I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on this! Also, I'm curious, do you think Fidget's patched up look makes him more or less sympathetic?
