An American Tail appreciation post - "Somewhere Out There" lives rent-free in my head
Okay, real talk, how many of us were traumatized by An American Tail as kids? Cause I know I wasn't the only one. I mean, Fievel getting separated from his family? In a new country? Brutal. But also, somehow, it's a movie I keep coming back to. It's got that Don Bluth magic, even if I don't know who directed it, you know? All those dark colors and super expressive characters. And the music! "Somewhere Out There"? Absolute banger. Seriously, that song still gives me chills. I can probably sing the whole thing by heart right now. The scene where Fievel and Tanya are singing, not knowing if the other is alive? Gut-wrenching. Like, when she hits that high note, chef's kiss. Even the scary parts like Warren T. Rat were good, just...scary lol. I mean, who else remembers that freakish mask reveal? Honestly, it's one of those movies that's both nostalgic and still actually good. It handles the whole immigration thing in a way that's surprisingly deep for a kids' movie although maybe kids don't understand it fully. Plus Dom DeLuise as Tiger is just hilarious. "I'm in misery! Will someone throw me a fish?" he's great. It's definitely worth a rewatch if you're feeling a little sentimental. What are your favorite moments?
