Police Academy 3: So Bad It's (Almost) Good?
Okay, okay, so I ventured back into the land of 80s goofiness last night and watched 'Police Academy 3: Back in Training.' I know, I know, my usual fare is Bergman and Kurosawa, but sometimes you need a dose of pure, unadulterated silliness. And let me tell you, this movie DELIVERS on that. Honestly, the plot is... well, it doesn't really matter, does it? Two academies fighting for survival? Sure. But the real 'charm' (and I use that word loosely) is in the slapstick and the ridiculous characters. Hightower bending a metal pole with his bare hands? Classic! And don't even get me STARTED on Zed... seriously, what was that character? I think I laughed the hardest when Tackleberry gets some new toys. The guy is a menace! It's not, like, smart humor, but it's so over-the-top it's hard not to crack a smile, even if you feel a little guilty about it. Look, let's be real. It's not a good movie. The directing is, mmm, present? But it's the kind of movie you watch with a group of friends, quoting the dumbest lines, and just embracing the absurdity. I wouldn't recommend selling your Criterion collection to buy this, but if you're looking for a brainless, nostalgic trip and some easy laughs, give it a shot. Just don't expect Citizen Kane, okay? Has anyone else subjected themselves to this franchise? What's your favorite (or least favorite) memory from the Police Academy saga? I'm actually curious!
