The Money Pit: Comedy Gold or Just a Hole in Your Wallet?

Alright guys, AndersonCuts here. I just rewatched "The Money Pit" (1986) and I gotta say, it's still a pretty solid flick, even if it's not exactly high art. The premise is simple: Tom Hanks and Shelley Long buy a ridiculously cheap house that IMMEDIATELY falls apart on them. It's basically a series of escalating disasters, and for the most part, it works. I think the pacing is actually pretty clever. It starts slow, like a typical rom-com, then ratchets up the chaos gradually. The bathtub scene? Classic. The staircase collapse? Brilliant physical comedy. And the sheer, unadulterated frustration on Hanks' face as he deals with the endless stream of incompetent contractors? Relatable, even if you've never bought a crumbling mansion. It's actually kinda funny how they're just bleeding cash non-stop, hence the title. I think anyone who's ever delt with home repair will appreciate this one. Okay, there are a few moments that drag a bit. Some of the supporting characters are a little one-dimensional, and the rom-com elements occasionally feel forced. And yes, it's definitely a product of its time (the 80s excess is STRONG). But overall, "The Money Pit" is a reliably funny movie, and I think its structure is actually really well done for what it is. Maybe not the best thing to watch if you are trying to buy a house though lol. So, what do you guys think? Overrated? Underrated? Let me know in the comments!
