Pretty In Pink: Anyone Else Think the Score is Underrated?

Okay, so I know everyone and their mom talks about the songs in Pretty in Pink. The Psycho Furs, OMD, Suzanne Vega... it's a legendary 80s soundtrack, no argument there. But am I the only one obsessed with the actual SCORE by Michael Gore? I feel like it gets totally overshadowed, which is a crime! Specifically, the cues during the prom scene just kill me. The way he weaves in and out of the popular songs, adding this layer of melancholy and uncertainty... it's so effective. Like when Andie's walking into the prom, completely out of her element, you can feel her anxiety through the music. It's not just some generic "romantic" backdrop, it tells its own story. I'm not saying it's a groundbreaking score on the level of, say, Morricone, but for a teen movie? It's surprisingly sophisticated and emotionally resonant. Also its kind of synthy and 80's but in a cool way. I honestly feel like it deserves way more recognition. Anyone else with me on this, or am I just shouting into the void? What are your favorite moments score-wise? I'm always trying to learn more about this stuff. Also, Duckie will always be the true MVP. Don't @ me.
