Nine 1/2 Weeks: Okay, Kim Basinger's Closet Goals, Though...
Okay, so I finally watched "Nine 1/2 Weeks." I'd heard so much about it, mostly the super-steamy reputation. And yeah, there are definitely some intense scenes. But honestly, I was way more fixated on Elizabeth's clothes! That whole pre-internet, pre-social media, effortless chic vibe is just killing me. Seriously, someone tell me where I can find a coat like the one she wears when they're first meeting in Chinatown? And all the oversized sweaters? Ugh, perfect. The actual story... well. It's definitely a product of its time, right? Mickey Rourke is undeniably charismatic (and those eyes!), but the whole power dynamic thing felt a little icky to me now. Like, the blindfold scene with the food? Visually stunning, but also...kinda controlling. I get it's supposed to be about exploration and pushing boundaries, but I guess my modern sensibilities are just side-eyeing a lot of it. And I know people are supposed to feel sorry for her at the end, but I mostly just felt like she needed to maybe find a really good therapist and possibly block this man's number?? Seriously, though, the styling in this movie is iconic! Did anyone else spend the whole time wanting to raid her closet? And is it just me, or does the art gallery where she works also contribute to the whole aesthetic? Someone needs to do a breakdown of all her outfits, stat! Overall, I can see why it's such a cult classic. It's visually arresting and definitely pushes buttons. But for me, the real stars are the costumes and the overall mood. It's a perfect example of '80s excess... in the best and sometimes worst ways.
