Critters (1986) - Surprisingly Fun!
Okay, so I was digging through the filmography of Stephen Herek (since "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" is a stone-cold classic), and I stumbled upon "Critters." Honestly, I went in expecting a low-budget, forgettable monster movie. And, yeah, it IS low-budget... but forgettable? Not at all! It's got this surprisingly fun, almost Amblin-esque vibe, even if the Gremlins were clearly an influence. The whole concept of these furry, man-eating aliens descending on a Kansas farm is just absurd enough to work. And the bounty hunters! What a riot. The whole transformation thing with the Leonard character (Ethan Phillips) was hilarious, especially when he's trying to imitate that rock star. The effects are pretty cheesy, even for the '80s, but it adds to the charm, right? Like, the Critters themselves are clearly puppets, but the voice acting and the way they move are still pretty disturbing. I'll admit, the pacing lags a little in the middle, especially during some of the farm scenes. The acting isn't going to win any awards, either. But the sheer inventiveness of the creature design and the goofy humor totally make up for it. I mean, the scene in the church with the Critters rolling around and causing havoc? Genius! Overall, "Critters" isn't some cinematic revelation, but it absolutely delivers on its low-budget promise. A solid watch if you're in the mood for some cheesy, creature-feature fun and want to see what the director of Bill and Ted was up to beforehand. Don't expect high art, just expect a good time. I'm giving it a solid 7/10, maybe a 7.5 for the sheer audacity of those furry little monsters.
