Raw Deal (1986) - The '80s Did Him DIRTY!
Okay, so I just re-watched Raw Deal (yeah, the Schwarzenegger one) and, while the plot is...let's say 'of its time,' the COSTUMING is yelling things at me! Like, Mark Kaminsky/Joseph P. Brenner (lol) is SUPPOSED to blend in, right? Go undercover in Chicago's mob scene? But they stick him in the LOUDEST things possible. Seriously, that baby blue leisure suit in the car dealership scene? Come ON. Who's idea was that?? My theory is that the costume design is subtly mocking the whole 'undercover' premise. Like, the movie KNOWS it's ridiculous that the FBI thinks this dude is going to fool anyone, so they just lean into it. Think about it: he's got that slicked-back hair, the massive shoulder pads (which, okay, it WAS the '80s, but still!), and outfits that scream 'small-town sheriff trying to be cool.' It's almost like the wardrobe department was in on the joke that this whole plan is a disaster waiting to happen. And let's not forget the outfits of Monique (Kathryn Harrold). Now, her wardrobe is actually kind of interesting. She's got this femme fatale thing going on, but it's also a little...off? Like she's trying too hard? Maybe her clothes are a visual representation of her desperation. She's using her looks to try and survive in this awful world, but it's not quite working because she makes some questionable choices. I'm putting way too much thought into this, aren't I? Haha! Anyway, yeah, Raw Deal is...a movie. But if you watch it with an eye towards the costuming, it adds a whole layer of unintentional hilarity. Or maybe it's entirely intentional on the part of the filmmakers and I'm just late to the party. Who knows? What do you guys think? Did anyone else notice how completely unconvincing any of his outfits were?
