"Maximum Overdrive" - So Bad It's... Kinda Good?
Okay, so I finally watched "Maximum Overdrive." I knew going in it was supposed to be, uh, special, being Stephen King's only directed film. And yeah, "special" is one word for it. The plot, let's be honest, is bonkers. Machines revolting because of a comet? Sure, why not? But once you accept the premise, there's a certain chaotic energy I kinda dug. The pacing is all over the place, but honestly, some of the kills are darkly hilarious. The lawnmower scene? Brutal, over the top, and strangely memorable. Emilio Estevez is doing his best with what he's got, and I actually liked the kid, Deke. His interactions with the cook, Bubba, were one of the more grounded parts. Definitely a few dodgy acting moments though, I'm looking at you Curtis. But the general mood that permeates the film elevates it beyond its shortcomings. The soundtrack by AC/DC is what really elevates this thing for me. It's not subtle, but it perfectly complements the absurdity. "Who Made Who" blasting during the truck attacks? Chef's kiss. It's almost like AC/DC understood the movie's frequency better than King himself, lol. I think this is a good example of where the soundtrack really elevates a film - its got it in spades, and it makes the moments of sheer terror memorable. Overall, is "Maximum Overdrive" a good movie? Probably not in the traditional sense. But is it entertaining? Absolutely. It's a messy, bizarre, and kinda awesome slice of 80s horror cheese. If you're looking for a movie to watch with friends and laugh at, this is a solid choice. Just don't expect high art... unless you count killer trucks with Green Goblin masks as art. Which, frankly, I kinda do?
