Down by Law: Jarmusch's Deadpan Masterclass (or is it?)
Okay, so I finally got around to Down by Law after years of hearing about it. Jarmusch, black and white, New Orleans... I went in expecting something pretty specific, and I got something...else. It's definitely... deliberate. The pacing is glacial at times, which I generally appreciate, but even I occasionally found myself checking the time. I guess what I'm saying is, you really have to be in the mood for this kind of thing. Don't go in expecting some kind of wacky prison break action flick. This is practically an anti-prison break action flick. What really saves it for me are the performances. Tom Waits as Zack is perfectly world-weary, and John Lurie is excellent as the perpetually annoyed Jack. But Roberto Benigni... man, he steals the show. His broken English and boundless enthusiasm provide the much-needed levity. The scene where he's drawing portraits of Minnie Mouse on the walls is pure genius. It's such a strange juxtaposition of childlike innocence against the backdrop of a grim Louisiana prison. And the running gag with him always wanting to get back to Italy? Priceless. Honestly, without Benigni, I'm not sure I would've made it through the whole thing. Visually, it's stunning. Robby Müller's cinematography is, as always, exceptional. The stark black and white really emphasizes the bleakness of their situation. The shots of the Louisiana bayou are especially beautiful, even in their swampy, mosquito-infested glory. The contrast between the claustrophobia of the prison and the vastness of the landscape is powerfully done. I mean, you can almost feel the humidity. One potential downside is that, and I understand it might have been intentional, the lack of character development. It's like, they start out kind of mopey and they end up kinda... less mopey? I dunno, I wanted more depth. So, yeah, Down by Law. Is it a perfect film? Nah, probably not. Is it worth watching? Absolutely. It's a unique cinematic experience that stays with you long after the credits roll. Just prepare yourself for a slow burn and embrace the awkward silences. And maybe bring some bug spray in case you start feeling like you're actually in that swamp.
