Asterix in Britain (1986) - Still Hilarious After All These Years!
Okay, so I revisited Asterix in Britain (1986) the other day, and it's still a complete riot! I know it's probably not the most faithful adaptation of the comic (I'm a huge Asterix book nerd, after all!), but honestly, it's one of my fave Asterix movies. The whole thing is just so wonderfully silly and captures the spirit (if not the letter) of the book. Like, the running gag about the warm beer and boiled boar? Genius! And the Romans' attempts to understand British culture never gets old. Seriously, the rugby match scene is pure gold. I'm giggling just thinking about it. What I really love is how they exaggerate the stereotypes. It's obviously playing up clichés, but it does so in a way that's laugh-out-loud funny. The British villagers perpetually saying 'Jolly Good' after every near-death experience? Inspired! I also thought the voice acting was really spot-on. I just wish I knew who the director was! But I guess it gives it a bit of mystery. Plus, I always thought that the casting of Getafix was really well done. Not too young, not too old, and very wizardly looking. Of course, there are some things that are a little... dated. The animation isn't exactly Pixar quality, haha. Some of the visual gags are a bit repetitive if you've seen it a million times (like me), but that's just nitpicking, though, right? Overall, Asterix in Britain still holds up as a fun, feel-good adaptation. It's definitely one I recommend if you wanna switch your brain off and have a good time. Definitely worth the rewatch, especially if you grew up watching it! What do you all think, any other big fans here, or am I just showing my age? lol.
