From Beyond - Okay, Where Did Doc McTavish Get Those Outfits?
Okay, so I just watched "From Beyond." I went in expecting 80s schlock horror (which, let's be honest, it totally delivered!), but I was NOT prepared for Barbara Crampton’s performance. I mean, she goes from buttoned-up psychiatrist to… well, that pretty quickly. And Jeffrey Combs is always a delight. But seriously, what was the deal with Doc McTavish's wardrobe choices after the Resonator got turned on? Leather? Cleavage? Fishnets? Was that supposed to be his deepest, darkest self coming out or something? He’s supposed to be a scientist, not a dominatrix. I get that the Resonator messes with your brain, but it felt a little… random? Like the costume department just raided a Spirit Halloween store and went wild. And don't even get me started on the interdimensional monsters! Eww. But hey, at least the special effects were wonderfully gross and delightfully practical. No CGI here, baby! My question is this: Was the bizarre wardrobe change a deliberate commentary on repressed sexuality, or was it just pure 80s excess? I'm leaning towards the latter, but I'd love to hear what you guys think. Did anyone else find that aspect of the movie unintentionally hilarious? Or am I just being too critical of a gloriously cheesy horror flick? And btw, anyone else think this film is secretly a romantic comedy? Just me? Okay...
