So... Is "No Retreat, No Surrender" a Benny Chan Warm-Up?

Okay, so I just finished watching "No Retreat, No Surrender" (1986). Look, I know it's not exactly Bergman, but as a student of director filmographies, I gotta wonder what the deal is with Cory Yuen. I've been digging into his work and you can totally see the seeds of Benny Chan's style in this. The over-the-top acting, the slightly cheesy but actually kinda brilliant training montages, even the plot feels like a slightly sillier version of some of Chan's later HK action flicks. I mean seriously, that training montage with Bruce Lee's ghost? That was... a choice. A wonderfully cheesy, 80s choice, but a choice nonetheless! And Kurt McKinney as Jason is wonderfully earnest, even if his acting is... well, let's just say his kicks are better. And Jean-Claude Van Damme as Ivan the Russian is pure gold. He's so ridiculously evil! But seriously, do you think maybe Benny Chan was an uncredited assistant director, or that Yuen did some work with Chan afterward? The styles are SO familiar. Anyone else see the similarities? Or am I just projecting my love for HK action onto a fairly mediocre American martial arts movie? Also, can we talk about the scene where Jason is dancing in the disco? I almost choked laughing. Was that supposed to be serious? I'm so confused, but also kinda love it. I really want to know who the director is so that I can dive into the director's filmography, but it seems unknown. Does anyone know who the credited director is?
