Just Watched Jean de Florette AGAIN - Did you catch THIS detail?
Okay, so I know, I know, I'm obsessed with Jean de Florette. I've seen it like, a million times (okay, maybe 10). But every single time I watch it, I notice something new that just guts me. This time, it was Ugolin's face when he first sees Jean arrive. You can see, like, this flicker of something in his eyes that's not just greed. It's almost... a sense of pity mixed with maybe a tiny bit of guilt? It's so subtle but it's there! And knowing what he's planning the whole time... it just makes it so much worse. Also, has anyone else noticed how the 'Le Papet' Cesar Soubeyran is always petting his animals? Like, he's got this whole image of being this tough, old farmer, but he's constantly stroking his cat or fussing over the rabbits. It's such a weird juxtaposition, and I think it shows he's not as heartless as he wants everyone to think. He IS heartless, of course, but that little detail makes him more complex. It's great acting, IMO. Speaking of, that well scene...ugh. The way Jean just collapses and starts begging... It breaks my heart every single time. I swear, Depardieu was robbed of an Oscar for that performance. Did anyone else think that the whole time Jean's struggling that he maybe should have just relocated the spring? Just a thought, but still tragic. Anyway, I just needed to share. I'm probably late on these observations but lemme know if you've noticed anything else interesting that I missed!
