Chow Yun-Fat and Brotherhood: Rewatching 'A Better Tomorrow'
Alright, cinephiles, moviebuff_marc here. Just finished another watch of John Woo's 'A Better Tomorrow' (yeah, I know, duh, I had to check the spelling quick LOL), and man, this thing STILL hits hard. The whole thing with Mark Gor (Chow Yun-Fat being a total badass) and Ho (Ti Lung), the bro code is strong with these two. It's basically a Hong Kong version of a classic crime drama, like 'The Godfather' but, you know, with way more gunfights and trench coats that somehow stay pristine even after a hundred bullet holes. Seriously, what's the material on those things? The family drama is what really gets me though. Ho trying to go straight and reconnect with his cop brother Kit (Leslie Cheung, RIP) but can't seem to escape his past…it's Shakespearean, I tell ya! Okay, maybe not Shakespeare, but definitely Scorsese-level intensity. The scene where Mark gets crippled trying to avenge Ho? Gut-wrenching. It's loyalty to a fault, which is a very Gen X thing, I suppose. We romanticize that stuff, don't we? It's not perfect, of course. Some of the acting from the supporting cast is a little... hammy, and the plot gets a bit convoluted at times. The whole thing with the counterfeit money operation is a bit of a snooze compared to the emotional stuff. But the action sequences are groundbreaking, and the chemistry between Chow Yun-Fat and Ti Lung is undeniable. Overall, 'A Better Tomorrow' is a solid 80s action flick with surprising depth. If you haven't seen it, and you're into the whole honor-among-thieves, slow-motion gun ballet thing, give it a shot. You might be surprised at how much it sticks with you. What do you guys think... overrated? Underrated? Lay it on me.
