Okay, but did anyone else notice the early 80s sci-fi lewks in Transformers: The Movie?
So, I finally got around to watching The Transformers: The Movie (1986) and, like, the actual robot stuff was cool and all, but I'm always about the fashion. And wow, that movie is a TIME CAPSULE. Obviously, the human characters aren't exactly serving high fashion, but there's something so charming about the vibe. Like, Daniel Witwicky's outfits? Peak 80s kid core. Side note, he was kinda annoying tho, lol. But it's not just the humans. Think about the environments and how they inform the overall aesthetic. The Junkion planet? The whole vibe is this kind of post-apocalyptic punk with all the scrap metal and vibrant (albeit grimey) colours. Or even the Autobot City on Earth – all sharp angles and futuristic, but still somehow grounded in that blocky 80s design sensibility. It's not runway-worthy, but it's definitely influencing how I think about retro-futurism now. What really struck me was how the color palettes enhanced the scenes. Unicron's world, all purples and reds, gives off such a powerful, evil energy. Then you compare it to the vibrant blues and yellows of Cybertron, and you get a real visual sense of the conflict. Maybe it's a reach, but costume (or, metal-tume?) design is about setting the mood, right? Overall, it's a fun little watch and I didn't regret it! What did you guys think?
