Manon of the Spring: Revenge is a Dish Best Served...with Sunshine?

Okay, so I FINALLY got around to watching Manon of the Spring after seeing Jean de Florette years ago. And wow, talk about a slow burn. I mean, seriously, the revenge plot takes FOREVER to actually kick in. But, you know, in a beautiful, sun-drenched, 'this is why I want to move to Provence' kind of way. Emmanuelle Béart is captivating as Manon. She's got this wild, almost feral quality, which makes her revenge all the more believable. Remember when she floods the cave and cuts off the water supply? I was practically cheering! It's that classic Greek tragedy vibe, right? Like Elektra or something, but with goats and ridiculously picturesque landscapes. Did anyone else think that Ugolin's character was actually more sympathetic in this one? He seemed genuinely remorseful (kinda). Still a creep, though. Poor dude wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. My only real gripe? The pacing. It's so leisurely. I get that it's French cinema, and that's part of the charm, but sometimes I just wanted Manon to get on with it! It could have been a little tighter, storyline-wise. Still, powerful stuff. Makes you think about greed, guilt, and the long shadows secrets can cast. Also, that music! Haunting! Overall, a solid follow-up, though maybe not quite as gripping as the first one. Worth watching if you like your drama slow-cooked and visually stunning... and you’re in the mood for a movie that might make you want to buy a farm in France and raise sheep. Just me? Okay then!
