The Mosquito Coast: That Refrigeration Tho...
Alright, so I just re-watched "The Mosquito Coast" (the Harrison Ford one, naturally). It's... intense. I always forget just how unhinged Allie Fox gets. But beyond the story, I'm always drawn to the tech stuff. Because let's be real, that giant ice-making machine he builds in the jungle? Wild. Like, I'm sitting here wondering about the actual engineering involved in something that massive and rickety even working for a day, let alone seemingly a few months. The sounds it makes are incredible too, all those creaks and groans. I'm guessing they layered a ton of different metal stresses and maybe some low-end industrial noises to make it sound so precarious. Props to the sound design there. And the scale of the project! Remember when they're hacking through the jungle to make 'civilization?' That was some serious set building. I was genuinely impressed with how they made it look like they carved out a whole town. River Phoenix is also great here, you can really see his talent starting to come through. He's got that quiet observer thing down pat. The ending is so tragic though. I won't spoil it, but it really took me back to how it made me feel the first time I saw it. The shift in tone from this idealistic vision to utter desperation is really affective. Okay, rant over. Anybody else notice the details in the sets/sound? Maybe I'm just a weirdo who gets excited about jungle refrigeration tech, lol. Curious to hear what others thought about the film, especially from a technical perspective.
