Betty Blue: Is She Really "Crazy" or Just...Reacting Appropriately?
Okay, so I just finished watching Betty Blue and, woah. That movie hits different at 3 AM than it probably does at, like, noon. I know everyone focuses on how Betty goes "mad," but I'm wondering if it's less about her being crazy and more about her just... reacting to the absolute garbage fire that is her life with Zorg. Like, the guy's supposed to be writing a novel, but he's basically just a handyman who's totally fine with being mediocre. And she's pouring her soul into supporting him, and he just kinda shrugs. Remember that scene where she types up his manuscript, and it's just… endless pages of nothing? I think that was the beginning of her unraveling, truthfully. How can you be with someone who has no ambition? That can drive a person crazy, right?! And honestly, I think she gets labeled as "crazy" because she actually cares. She's passionate, she's intense, and she feels things deeply – things that Zorg seems totally incapable of feeling. Is that really madness, or is it just… being more alive than everyone else around her? Like, the way she reacts to injustice, to people being cruel or dismissive, it’s almost like she's holding a mirror up to the world. The world is a mess so it's kind of reasonable that she's a mess. She is reacting to reason! And no one wants to see that reflected back at them so they just say she's nuts. That's my theory anyway. Think about that infamous eye scene, right? Obviously horrific, but where does that stem from? It's from the loss from the adoption agency! Losing that baby. Then losing the manuscript. It's not like she rolls out of bed and starts sticking sharp objects every day (ok, yeah, maybe she stole the sharp object from the restaurant?). It's like a domino effect of disappointment and lack of support. Anyway, I'm rambling now. But yeah, Betty Blue. Crazy? Or just a casualty of a world that crushes sensitive souls? I'm leaning towards the latter. Thoughts?
