Children of a Lesser God: Still Holds Up!

Okay, so I just re-watched "Children of a Lesser God" for like, the millionth time. Seriously, Marlee Matlin totally deserved that Oscar! It's wild to think she's still the only deaf actor to win. Anyway, the whole movie is just... powerful. The way it explores communication, independence, and love is just so well done. I think what really gets me is the tension between James (William Hurt) and Sarah. He's trying to pull her into his world, and she's fiercely protective of her own. That scene where they're arguing in sign language, and you just feel the frustration and the love... ugh, gets me every time. Plus, the whole setting at the school for the deaf adds such a unique layer to the story. I dunno, it just felt real and raw, which is somethin' I really appreciate. It's not a perfect movie, obviously. Some of the '80s-ness is a little cringe now lol. And maybe James's character is a bit too "savior"-ish at times? But overall, it's still a super impactful film and definitely worth checking out (or re-watching!) if you haven't seen it. What did you guys think of it? Especially interested to hear from anyone who has ties to the Deaf community - did it resonate with you the same way? Also, side note: anyone else ship James with Lydia (Piper Laurie)? She was awesome haha. Okay, I'll stop rambling now!
