Okay, "When the Wind Blows" COMPLETELY Broke Me... Anyone Else?
Guys, I just finished watching "When the Wind Blows" (1986) and I'm... wrecked. I knew going in it would be heavy, but I wasn't prepared for that. The animation style is so quaint and sweet with Jim and Hilda, and then BAM! Nuclear apocalypse. The contrast just GUTTED me. It was so upsetting! I have a theory, though, that's been swirling in my head since the ending. It's not so much about the obvious anti-war message, but more about the insidious nature of propaganda and clinging to outdated beliefs. Jim and Hilda fully believed the government pamphlets would save them. They built their little lean-to, followed the instructions to a T, and yet... it was all utterly useless. The film really hammers home how stuck they are in their past, and how that ultimately dooms them. It's like, they're so trusting, so British in their stoicism, that they can't even comprehend the horror of what's actually happening. I think what hits me particularly hard is that I feel some people are like that today... blindly trusting what they are told without questioning, especially with social media. Anyway, that's just my take - what do you guys think? And the ending... oh god, the ending. When Jim is calling for his mummy... I seriously lost it. Like, sobbing uncontrollably. He goes from worrying about the rations or whatever to nothing. It's that slow, insidious decline that I can't handle. It's not just about the bomb, it's the loneliness of it all, you know? And the pointlessnes of it all! I don't know, I just feel so profoundly sad and angry after watching that. I might need to watch something fluffy and light just to recover. Also, is it just me or does the whistling-song make anyone else uncomfrtable while thinking about the end of the film? Anyway, I'm still trying to process everything, but I wanted to see if anyone else feels as emotionally overwhelmed by this movie as I do. Let me know your theories or just your general feelings about it, because I really need to talk about this!
