At Close Range - Seriously, How Messed Up Is This Movie?! (Spoilers!)
Okay, so I just watched "At Close Range" (1986) and WOW. I'm still feeling completely gutted. I knew it was supposed to be intense, but...good lord. Sean Penn is amazing, as always, but Christopher Walken? He gave me chills. Pure, unadulterated evil. Like, I had to pause it a few times to process what I was seeing. I get being a bad guy, but to do that to your own family?! Specifically, the scene where Brad Jr. realizes what his dad is really capable of...when he sees his cousin lying dead. My heart just broke for him. You can see the innocence just drain from his face. And then the ending? I was a sobbing mess, completely unprepared and devastated! I just wanted him to be free and to start over and be safe. I can barely even think about it. Poor Brad Jr...he was too trusting and wanted so bad to be close to his father, and look where it got him! What's really stuck with me is the whole "father-son" dynamic. Was Brad Sr. a psychopath from the start? Or was there some point where he made a choice that led him down this completely dark path? And Brad Jr...even knowing what his dad was, did he still love him? That courtroom scene was particularly heartwrenching. What do you guys think? Seriously, someone tell me I'm not the only one who needed a full box of tissues for this movie. I'm emotionally wrecked. Also, that 80s soundtrack was strangely perfect and made it even MORE upsetting.
