Bob Hoskins Kills it in Mona Lisa, no Cap!
Alright folks, scottscreens here, back with another quotable moment goldmine. This time, it's Mona Lisa (1986). Now, I went in expecting a cheesy 80s thriller, and while it is very 80s, what I got was way deeper. Bob Hoskins, man..."He was good, very good." Seriously, the guy becomes George. You feel his frustration, his loneliness, the way he's just completely out of his depth. When he's desperately searching for Simone's friend, and the whole world is like, neon and rain-slicked streets... it's a VIBE. A heartbreaking, kinda sleazy vibe, but a vibe nonetheless. Cathy Tyson as Simone is fantastic too. She's got this cool, detached thing going on, but you can see the vulnerability underneath. The way she manipulates George is fascinating, and you're never quite sure if she actually cares about him or not. That whole relationship is messed up, but compelling. I really bought that she was playing that part. There a scene on a boat and just the way she sits with total apathy is just perfect. Okay, I'll admit, the pacing is a little slow in parts. And maybe the ending is a tad anticlimactic (or maybe reality just sucks like that haha). But honestly? Hoskins' performance alone makes it worth watching. Plus, the movie's got some killer one-liners that I'm already adding to my repertoire. I definitely reccomned especially if you like like crime movies that are about feelings. Anyone else seen it? What were your takeaways? Spill the tea!
