Matador (1986) - Diego's Dreams & the Bullfight as a Metaphor??
Okay, so I've watched Matador, probably, like, seven or eight times? And each time I see something new. This time around, Diego's dreams REALLY got me thinking. He's so innocent (ish), right? But he's got this intense, almost erotic fascination with death, especially the bullfight. And then he dreams he's the matador, but he's also like...killed? Or dying? It's so messed up. I think it's more than just a simple 'Oh, he's guilty because he dreams it' thing. It's deeper. My theory is that the bullfight isn't just some imagery, it's the KEY. It's a metaphor for the whole twisted relationship between Diego, María, and Ángel. Diego's caught in the middle, drawn to this dark allure of María's obsession (which is tied to death, obviously), but he's also repelled by it. He WANTS to be Ángel – the confident, 'successful' matador, but he's inherently not. He's gentle, clumsy, and filled with guilt. Think about the scene where they are staring at each other at the bullfight. It is so intense. It's practically foreplay. And then there's Ángel. He's the matador, the one 'in control', but he's ultimately just as much a victim of this dance with death as Diego is. Maybe even MORE so? He's a little one-dimensional to me, but I get what Almodóvar was going for. He is so controlled but totally obsessed with María. He is the bull, and she's the (twisted) matador. I'm also curious if anyone else thinks María is... kinda using Diego? I mean, she clearly is drawn to Ángel, but Diego is a pawn in her game. She loves death, plain and simple. Lastly, I think the ending, with Diego taking the blame for everything, is his way of finally stepping into the arena. He's making a choice, even if it's a self-destructive one. It's like he's saying, 'Okay, I'll play this game, but on MY terms.' He's not Ángel, he's not a killer (well, not really), but he's willing to sacrifice himself for… something. Redemption? María's attention? I'm still not completely sure, but I'm curious what everyone else thinks!
