"Mauvais Sang" - Weirdest heist movie ever? (and I kinda loved it)

Okay, so I just finished watching "Mauvais Sang" by Leos Carax. Wow. That was... something else. I went in expecting a neo-noir heist film, and I sort of got that, but with like, a heavy dose of French New Wave existentialism thrown in? I knew Carax was known for his stylized stuff, but this was on another level. I'm honestly not sure what to make of it, but I'm definitely still thinking about it. Specifically, I'm stuck on the whole Alex (Denis Lavant) character. He's supposed to be this young thief, right? But he spends half the movie looking angsty and running in slow motion. That extended sprint scene with David Bowie's 'Modern Love' playing is iconic, I get it, but it felt so out of place with the rest of the film's grimy heist setup. Was that sequence necessary? Did it add anything besides cool visuals? And Juliette Binoche! Beautiful, captivating, but again, what was her motivation? She's married to one of the crooks but instantly falls for Alex? The romance felt so sudden and mostly expressed through longing glances and dramatic posing... which, I guess, is the point? I'm just trying to figure out if the character work itself was a bit thin, or if it was all so stylized that the motivations feel secondary. Anyone else seen this? What did you think of the, uh, non-traditional action sequences and the overall dreamlike vibe? I'm genuinely curious about other people's interpretations of this movie because right now I'm oscillating between 'pretentious nonsense' and 'secretly brilliant'. Maybe somewhere in between?
