Mauvais Sang: Underappreciated Cool or Just Plain Weird?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching Mauvais Sang (aka Bad Blood) after seeing it pop up on a bunch of "hidden gem" lists. Directed by Leos Carax (yeah, I had to look that up again, lol). And...I'm conflicted. On one hand, it's got this super stylish, almost neo-noir vibe that I dig. The whole heist setup with the aging crooks and the young blood – classic stuff. Plus, there's this underlying sense of dread and paranoia that really works. But on the other hand... it's just so damn weird. Like, Denis Lavant's character, Alex, just randomly starts sprinting down the street at, like, superspeed? No explanation, just zoom. It looks cool, sure, and I'm all about a guy running fast, but it feels so out of left field. And Juliette Binoche is amazing as Anna, but their 'chemistry' felt off to me, maybe it was intentional? I'm not sure. The whole thing just felt like a fever dream sometimes. I really enjoyed the practical aspect of the movie, I dont think they used any post production effects. The use of colour and shadows was really well done. It's the kind of movie you can tell that the director had a clear vision/style. So, yeah, worth checking out if you're into something a little different and arthouse-y. But don't expect a straight-up action flick. Think more… existential crisis with a side of high-speed sprinting and stolen vaccines. Let me know what you guys think if you've seen it!
