Kin-dza-dza!: Overrated Sci-Fi Soviet Satire (or am I just missing something?)

Alright, alright, I've finally caved. I watched Kin-dza-dza!. And... I don't get the hype. Everyone's always going on about how brilliant and subversive it is, this scathing commentary on Soviet society blah blah blah. I saw a bunch of guys in rags saying "koo!" a lot and I'm supposed to be blown away? I mean, yeah, the production design is... something. The alien world is consistently drab and oppressive, I'll give them that. But is that all there is? Maybe I'm just not intellectual enough. The whole "match" thing, the hierarchy based on pants color... is there some deep meaning I'm missing? Or is it just absurd for the sake of being absurd? Because if it's the latter, congratulations, it's achieved that. The two leads were alright, but like, did anyone actually care about them? I felt zero emotional connection. And that scene with the sand singing... ugh, pretentious doesn't even begin to describe it. I was checking my watch waiting for it to END. Look, I'm not saying it's bad. It's just... not as amazing as everyone makes it out to be. Maybe it hit harder back in '86 when the Soviet Union was still a thing, but in 2024? It just feels like a long, confusing, and ultimately kind of boring slog through a desert planet. Someone explain the magic to me? What am i missing? Don't get me wrong, i love a good foreign movie, but damn. Maybe I'm just too used to Michael Bay explosions and superhero quips. But seriously, you guys rave and rave, and I watched it all the way through waiting for the "a-ha!" moment that never came. So, yeah, call me a philistine, idc.
