Is "The Green Ray" Actually About... Aliens?
Okay, hear me out. I just re-watched "The Green Ray" and something really struck me this time around that I hadn't considered before. We all talk about Delphine being so intensely, painfully lonely during her vacation, and that's totally valid. Rohmer captures that feeling perfectly, the awkward silences and the desperate searching for connection. But what if her sensitivity, her heightened awareness of the world and its supposed signs (like the green ray itself), is actually...something more? Like, what if she’s not just lonely, but literally sensing something beyond our understanding? Think about it. Delphine is constantly searching, right? She's looking for meaning in the sunsets, in conversations, even in random encounters. She's hypersensitive to the emotions of others, almost to a disturbing degree. It’s like she’s tuning in to a frequency that no one else can hear. And the green ray itself? Is it just a natural phenomenon, or is it a visual representation of…something else? The film never explicitly states anything, which is part of what I love about Rohmer, but that ambiguity allows for so many interpretations. Couldn’t it be some kind of cosmic signal? I'm not saying Delphine is an alien, LOL, but maybe she's more attuned to whatever cosmic energies are out there than the rest of us dense humans. Maybe that's why she feels so alienated, so disconnected. She's picking up on things that others aren't, and it's isolating her. The green ray finally 'validates' her. It's proof that there is something more, something she's been instinctively searching for. Maybe this is a stretch, but the film really resonated with me different this watch through and it's got me thinking. What do you guys think? Am I completely off my rocker, or does this theory hold some water? Maybe I've just been watching too much X-Files lately shrugs.
