Lucas: Awkward Teenage Feels and Football! (Throwback Review)

Okay, so I just re-watched "Lucas" (1986) and it's still a totally charming movie. Yeah, it's kinda cheesy and dated (the clothes, the music!), but in a good way? Like, Corey Haim is adorable as Lucas, the super-smart, nerdy kid who's crushing hard on Maggie (Kerri Green). I totally felt for him when she starts, like, hanging out with Cappie, the football jock. First love is ROUGH. That scene where Lucas tries out for the football team to impress Maggie is both hilarious and heartbreaking. He's so clearly out of his depth, but you gotta admire the guy for trying. Who hasn't done something crazy for love? LOL What really got me was how Cappie, even though he's the popular guy, is actually a decent dude. He looks out for Lucas, even after Lucas gets all jealous and stuff. I think that's a really important part of the movie – showing that jocks can be nice people too! I also kinda loved how smart and determined Lucas was. He was definitely ahead of his time -- I mean, a 14 year old who knows a lot about bugs? Kinda quirky, but also endearing. I'm not gonna lie, I cried a little bit at the end there. Maybe I'm just a sucker for 80s movies, but it's got heart. If you're looking for a sweet, slightly sad, kinda-funny movie night throwback, I recommend giving 'Lucas' a watch... just be prepared for some serious 80s nostalgia. :) P.S. Winona Ryder is in this too, super young!! I almost didn't recognize her.
