School of Thieves - is it supposed to be this insane?
Okay, so I just finished watching "School of Thieves" (1986) and...wow. I feel like I just mainlined pure, uncut chaos. Seriously, what was that? The pacing was like a squirrel on crack, and I'm pretty sure I know more about my neighbor's cat than I do about any of the characters. Villaggio, Banfi, and Boldi are clearly comedic geniuses, but even they felt like they were just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something would stick. And maybe it did? I dunno. I'm laughing, but I'm also deeply confused. I mean, did anyone else actually understand the plot? Something about idiot nephews and a rich uncle and...burglary? It felt like a fever dream fueled by espresso and bad dubbing. The scene where they tried to break into the vault with the inflatable raft? Pure gold. But also, what? And the disguises! Oh god, the disguises. They looked like rejects from a low-budget circus. I almost choked on my popcorn. So, am I missing something here? Is there some hidden layer of comedic brilliance I'm too sleep-deprived to appreciate? Or is "School of Thieves" just intentionally a train wreck of slapstick? I'm genuinely curious if anyone else out there has seen this and can offer some kind of explanation for what just assaulted my eyeballs. Is it so bad it's good? Or just...bad? Help me understand, midnight movie crew!
