Dirty Dancing: Was Baby's Transformation Believable?
Okay, so I just rewatched Dirty Dancing (for like, the millionth time, no shame) and I'm really curious what everyone thinks about Baby's character arc. I mean, obviously, Jennifer Grey is amazing and her awkwardness in the beginning is so relatable. But did you guys buy into the whole "overnight dancer" thing? I know it's a movie, but it always felt a little rushed. Like, from clumsy, clueless, good-intentions-only Baby to pulling off that lift at the end... it's quite a jump! I was thinking especially about the scene where Johnny's trying to teach her the mambo and she's just... flailing lol. It's hilarious, but then a few montage scenes later, she’s suddenly keeping up? I guess that's movie magic, but how much suspension of disbelief is TOO much? I'm more interested in the emotional transformation, honestly. Seeing her gain confidence and stand up for herself, that part always resonated with me. And speaking of Johnny (Patrick Swayze, RIP), did anyone else find their relationship dynamic a little... problematic now? I mean, she's technically a minor, even if it's only by a little, and he's in a position of power. I still love their chemistry, but I'm wondering if in today's climate, the power dynamics make you see things differently? So yeah, what are your thoughts? Believable transformation? Problematic romance? I'm all ears!
