Untouchables: Underrated or OVERrated?
Okay, alright, hear me out before you start throwing rotten tomatoes. "The Untouchables"... yeah, I saw it. Yeah, Costner's jawline is impressive. But is it really the untouchable classic everyone makes it out to be? I'm not so sure. Look, De Niro as Capone is good, I'll give you that. But the rest? It's so... operatic. The whole 'milk bar shootout' sequence? Stylish, sure. But realistic? Please. It feels like Brian De Palma trying way too hard to be Sergio Leone. And Costner? He's fine, but honestly, pretty bland. Connery steals every scene he's in (RIP), which kinda proves my point that Ness is the weak link in his own story. My theory? It's pure nostalgia goggles. People remember the idea of "The Untouchables" more than the actual movie. It's got that classic 'good vs. evil' thing going, the snappy suits, the whole 'fight the system' vibe. But strip that away, and you're left with a pretty standard, albeit well-made, cops-and-robbers flick with some over-the-top direction. I mean, it's good, but I feel like it's good in the way a really shiny, well-made hammer is good. It gets the job done, but it's not exactly... art, is it? Maybe I would think that it was the most amazing film if I had seen it when it originally came out in the 80s. But seeing it for the first time now? Eh, just alright. So, yeah, I said it. Fight me in the comments. Just be prepared for my well-reasoned, yet probably unpopular, rebuttals.
