Untouchables: Is Malone actually dirty, just a lil bit?
Okay, so I'm up late, shocker, watching The Untouchables for probably the millionth time. De Niro as Capone is... chef's kiss. But something's always bugged me about Malone, you know? Sean Connery, being all grizzled and Irish and incorruptible. Except... is he really incorruptible? Hear me out. He knows EVERYTHING. He knows who to bribe, who takes what, where the booze is. Like, impossibly detailed knowledge. We're led to believe that's just because he's been on the force forever and seen it all, but what if he wasn't just observing? What if he was part of the system, just taking a smaller cut, enough to keep him comfortable but not enough to be flashy like Capone? He sees Ness as a chance to actually clean up, finally, because Capone's gone too far even for him, but he's also lowkey using Ness to settle some scores. Think about the courthouse shootout. Malone is the one who leads Ness there, knowing full well it's a death trap. He almost gets Ness killed, and him too! Was that carelessness, or was it a calculated risk to take out some rivals and test Ness's resolve? He says he knows where to find the ledgers. He knows where literally all the dirty money is stashed, like some kind of superpowered mob accountant. Also, as a little side note, I still think it's hilarious how Eliot Ness turns into a stone cold killer by the end of the movie. I'd like to see what Eliot Ness did after he cleaned up Chicago, like did he go off the rails or something? Anyway, maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe Malone is just a genuinely good cop who's seen too much crap. But something about the way he operates, the way he knows EVERYTHING... it just feels a little too convenient. And honestly, it'd make his death even more tragic if he was finally trying to be 100% clean and then got taken out for it. Just a late-night thought. Let me know if I'm totally off base here.
