Untouchables - Still Gets Me Every Time!
Okay, so I rewatched "The Untouchables" AGAIN last night. It's just one of those movies I can't resist, you know? Like, I think I'm numb to the violence (the baseball bat scene still makes me flinch, though) but then I see something new. This time, it was all about Sean Connery's Malone – the world-weariness just oozes off of him. The way he sizes up Ness right away and knows he’s got potential… I just found myself focusing on his performance more this time around. And the staircase scene at Union Station? I know it's been parodied a million times, but it's still SO effective! The tension is cranked up to eleven. The use of slow motion, how they intercut between the shooting and the baby carriage...chef's kiss. Even though I know exactly what's going to happen, I'm still gripping my seat! It's interesting to see how De Palma uses these almost operatic moments contrasted with the more gritty street scenes. I also noticed on this viewing how much the movie invests in making Ness look like a fish out of water. That initial raid where everything goes wrong? Brutal. Costner's performance honestly gets underrated, think he does a really good job of portraying someone righteous but naive. He grows into the role, and it's awesome when he finally gets to be a badass. Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts! Any other "Untouchables" fans out there? What little details do YOU always pick up on?
