RoboCop: Overrated 80s Nostalgia or Am I Just a Grump?

Okay, so I finally caved and watched RoboCop (the original, obviously, none of those sequels or remakes). Everyone and their mother seems to worship this movie. Violent satire, blah blah blah. I get it. But honestly? I wasn't blown away. Don't get me wrong, Peter Weller's performance is pretty solid, especially the subtle robotic movements once he's, well, RoboCop-ified. And Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker? Textbook villain – smarmy, ruthless, the whole package. But the rest? Meh. The violence, which everyone seems to think is so groundbreaking and satirical, frankly, felt a bit… much? Like they were trying too hard to be edgy. The ED-209 malfunction scene? Yeah, it's kinda funny, but also just feels like cheap slapstick amidst all the supposed social commentary. And the social commentary itself? Omni Consumer Products is EVIL! Corporations bad! Duh. It's not exactly subtle genius, is it? I mean, sure, it was probably somewhat fresh at the time, but we've seen it a million times since. Maybe I'm just too jaded, or maybe I'm missing something, but I honestly think a lot of the love for this film comes down to pure 80s nostalgia goggles. People remember it fondly because it was cool when they were kids. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, there's entertainment value there, but a cinematic masterpiece? Come on. Also, that line, "I'd buy that for a dollar!" Annoying then, annoying now. Just saying.
