RoboCop (1987): Still Holds Up, But MAN is It Brutal!
Okay horrorheads, thriller junkies, anyone who appreciates some good ol' fashioned 80s dystopian weirdness... let's talk RoboCop (the original, obviously!). I rewatched it last night and, wow, it still packs a punch. I mean, it's not straight-up horror, but the level of violence is INSANE. Like, the moment Murphy dies? I still wince. The practical effects are so realistically disturbing. And the whole vibe of Detroit being a total hellscape run by equally evil corporations? Sadly, it feels a little too relevant these days, ya know? Clarence Boddicker and his gang are seriously some of the most memorable villains ever. Kurtwood Smith absolutely nails the slimy, psychopathic leader role. And Peter Weller as RoboCop? You almost forget it's a dude in a suit – he sells the blank, robotic stare perfectly. I especially loved how they slowly bring back pieces of Murphy's humanity throughout the movie, like the scene with the baby food. Hits you right in the feels, even under all that metal. I think what really makes RoboCop work is how satirical it is. It's making fun of corporate greed, media sensationalism, and the whole 'tough on crime' mentality. It's not just mindless action; there's actual stuff to think about. If you're squeamish, maybe steer clear. But if you're looking for a movie that's action-packed, thought-provoking (in a very 80s kinda way), and brutally honest about the darker sides of humanity (and technology), RoboCop is def worth a watch. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 chainsaws 🪚🪚🪚🪚 - anyone else think they should bring back practical effects instead of all this CGI crap?
