Evil Dead II: Groovy or Too Goofy?

Okay, so I just re-watched Evil Dead II for like the millionth time, and I'm still torn. On the one hand, it's arguably the most iconic of the series, right? The 'deadite' makeup is fantastic, and Bruce Campbell's performance is legendary. I mean, the chainsaw arm? Come on! And the scene where Ash is fighting his own possessed hand? Pure comedic genius. 'We're gonna get you. Not another peep!' Hahahahaha! But... sometimes I wonder if they went too far into the slapstick territory. Like, the first Evil Dead was genuinely terrifying and gritty. Evil Dead II has those moments too, don't get me wrong (the Henrietta rising from the cellar scene still creeps me out), but it also feels like a cartoon at times. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I honestly can't decide! I get that Sam Raimi was probably having a blast while making it, and that energy definitely comes across. And I ADORE the effects - they're so gloriously practical and over-the-top. But sometimes, I miss the pure, unadulterated horror of the original. Maybe that's just me? What do you all think? Is Evil Dead II a perfect blend of horror and comedy, or does the comedy sometimes undermine the scariness? Also, quick question: Does anyone else think that the ending of Evil Dead II is kind of...weird? Like, he just gets zapped into the past out of nowhere? Don't get me wrong, it's awesome, and leads perfectly into Army of Darkness, but it's still a bit of a jump, right? Anyway, let me know your thoughts! #evildead2 #brucecampbell #horror #deadites #samraimi
